Aberystwyth

 If any of you have seen the program Hinterland on the ABC, you will recognise Aberystwyth. It's midway up the Welsh Coast, and has been a popular seaside resort for a long time. It is also a University town, so there are lots of young people around.

My accomodation is right on the beach front, and my room on the second floor looks out to the ocean. Aberystwyth is famous for its sunsets, bu t the weather has not been conducive to sunsets. I've got 2 more nights, so I may be lucky.

The wind is ferocious!! And with an unseasonable cold front streaming down through Britain the temperature has been '8 feels like 2'  although as I type this it has reached the max of 11 and feels like 5. On the positive side, it has only rained when I have been safely tucked up - thanks weather god!!

By late afternoon the incoming waves were splashing up on to the promenade, but apparently in wild weather they will cover the promenade and road and even splash up on to the buildings!

Speaking of buildings, there were so many gorgeous ones.

I walked to the end of the promenade and on the inner side was a sheltered harbour


and some lovely seats - snakes? water serpents?


The old catle in on the point - mostly destroyed by Oliver Cromwell's men

It has a Gothic charm about it.


This would have been the kitchen hearth in the courtyard.


There was a stone circle - A Gorsedd circle created for an Eisteddfod in 1923.


Each of the stones has a name on it - apparently representing different parts of Wales. It is written in runes, and I can't read it!


The oldest part of the University is a magnificent building on the seafront, but it is all scaffolded because they are doing repairs to it, but I could see the tower from the castle hill.



Update: second night - all the storms have passed, it's still freezing but with clear skies, and ...

 Despite Trump's best attempts to disrupt my departure, the flight through the Middle East was smooth and efficient. It did feel a little strange watching the flight tracker as we flew up the Strait of Hormuz though! It was a very quick change over in Abu Dhabi, and we joined those who had flown from Sydney, including my other seat companions. The luggage arrived safely and the next challenge was finding the bus terminal. It took much longer than I expected, and several back and forths to find the terminal 'hiding' around a corner. After boarding it, though, I could relax through to Reading, then I had a wait for the train to take me to St Austell. That train was quite full, but I manage seats for both my backpack and myself. Exploring the Cotswolds Day 2

I had been told so many places that I HAD to see in the Cotswolds that there was no way I would get to all of them. In the end, I concentrated on a couple of villages near each other: Stow-on-the-Wold,  Bourton-on-the-Water, and Upper and Lower Slaughter. Stow-on-the-Wold is a quintessential Cotswold village, with a market square, a very old Church, and so many picturesque buildings. They no longer have a Visitor's Information, but the Library was able to provide me with 2 options for a walk around the town and beyond.St Edwards - a medieval church - is famous for one of its doors, which they has nicknamed the Hobbit door. The walk led me down past some lovely old buildings, then out into a tree lined lane. Part of the route was along the Fosse Way - an old Roman road that extends much of the length of England. Warwick Castle

 Next accomodation was in Banbury (of the Ride a Cock Horse fame) which was an ideal location for exploring the Cotswolds. I dropped off my backpack at the hotel - the lady was very obliging because I was about 1.5 hours before official check-in and was directed to an attic room up 3 flights of stairs - the last being like a turret climb. She was very apologetic but I reassured her that I would be fine. Then it was back to the train station for a short hop to Warwick to see the castle. I wasn't sure about it - it seemed very 'theme park' from the website, but I'm glad I went. Here it is! They have spent an absolute fortune creating really engaging displays. I knew bits and pieces about the family, but this really brought their Royal connections to life - check out the Duchesses's close relationship to Queen Victoria's son Prince of Wales.
